I’m Marques Young, but most folks know me as Q Sound. I’m a trombonist, composer, bandleader, and music director with a deep love for blending jazz, R&B, hip-hop, funk, soul, and classical music. After more than 15 years as Principal Trombone with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredible musicians and perform for audiences around the world.

When I moved from New York to Kuala Lumpur back in 2009, I found a whole new music scene and culture that inspired me to dig deeper into jazz and create something unique for Southeast Asia. I started my own projects, like the Q Sound Band and the Bassment Syndicate, which led to memorable performances across the region, including sold-out shows at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas. Beyond the stage, I’m passionate about mentoring young talent, and I’ve had the chance to lead projects like the Encounter Jazz Program and DFP’s Jazz Camp, where I’ve helped shape the next generation of jazz musicians.

My musical journey started young, back when I was just 12, playing the euphonium thanks to the guidance of Gordon Manley. At 16, I picked up the trombone, which eventually took me to Arkansas Tech and later to The Juilliard School, where I studied with some of the best—Joseph Alessi and other masters who taught me so much. Competitions and awards followed, like wins at the Frank Smith International Trombone Solo Competition and the Van Haney Orchestral Solo Competition, which were big highlights of my early career.

Over the years, I’ve shared the stage with jazz legends like Wynton Marsalis, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Benny Golson, as well as artists across genres like Lalah Hathaway and The Clark Sisters. Currently, you’ll find me performing with groups like the Patrick Terbrack Quintet and the Bassment Syndicate, as well as with orchestras and in festivals across Asia and beyond.

Whether I’m on stage, teaching, or collaborating, my goal is always the same: to connect through music and keep pushing the boundaries of what we can create together. I’m excited to share this journey with you!t to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

let’s work together
